1. Wed., Dec. 21 is our Annual HERITAGE DAY.  Please join us starting at 8:30 am.  Students and staff will have presentations pertaining to their heritages.  Families are asked to bring food related to their heritage.  Students will be free to go after clean-up (around noon).

2. Some students and teachers are participating in SECRET SANTA next week.  There is a sign-up sheet outside the office for those who wish to participate.  Names will be chosen tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 16. The “gifting” will happen Mon., 12/19 – Wed., 12/21.  Money does not need to be involved…opt for kind words and deeds, handmade gifts, etc.   The Secret Santas will be revealed at the end of the Heritage Day program.  Ms. Sue’s American History class is doing their own, but some of these students are also participating in the school wide exchange.

3. The long awaited WIND TURBINE PROJECT construction is under way.  Thank you for your cooperation in changing the traffic flow.  Entrance and exit remain the same, but drop-off and pick-up is now on the south side of the buildings.  The old arrangement will resume when construction is completed.

4. PSAT scores are in and your student has had a conference with Ms. Janie to go over results.  If you haven’t seen the results yet, ask your son or daughter for them.  (10^th and 11^th grades)

5. 11^th and 12^th graders earned COMMUNITY SERVICE points at the Palms of Pelican Cove last Friday when they helped sort toys collected for TOYS FOR TOTS.  Look for ways to do Community Service during Holiday time.

6. HELP!  Our 2^nd ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT is scheduled for Sat., January 28.  We need you to invite friends and family to donate money$$$$$$.  Go to our website: www.kingshillschool.org for information. Have you picked up a copy of St. Croix This Week?  Check out page 37!

7. AFTERSCHOOL PEER TUTORING is in place from 2:30 – 4:30.  Students are available Monday – Friday to assist other students with homework or areas of difficulty.  Please contact the office if your student needs this extra help

8. Nehemiah Lloyd will be performing in The Color Purple in February.  Break a leg!

9. The Marine Science class is teaming with Cane Bay Dive Shop.  Their 2^nd SNORKEL day (seas permitting) is Monday, Dec. 19.  Every effort is being made to have students back at school by 2:15.  Please be patient and plan accordingly.

We just finished our 2011 OFF THE HILL WEEK. This is a tradition at KHS since its inception.  The school is located on a hill; hence, most learning takes place OFF THE HILL.  This year many of the students and teachers spent the week aboard the Roseway Schooner – The World Ocean School.  For more about this program visit their website at http://www.worldoceanschool.org/.  Funding for this program was through Title V, a federal fund available to both private and public schools.   The land lubbers spent the week touring St. Croix taking pictures.  Part of their day was spent on computers experimenting with photo alteration.  Each student was given a DVD on which to save all their work.  A few of their photos will be displayed on this site, but for a more extensive look visit our Facebook site at http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/The-Kingshill-School/280761518644 .

The group gathered at 8 am Saturday morning April 16 at Golden Rock Shopping Center. They split into 2 groups to pick garbage from 5 Corners to Bassin Triangle.

Breaking news: Ms. Marla and Ms. Jan are just leaving with their classes on a field trip to the Caribbean Art Museum in Frederiksted.  They will be meeting with Kendell Henry who is the current artist-in-residence.  The time is 9:40.  The group will return at 12:30.

Ms. Sue and our team of students will be present at the Agricultural Fair Awards ceremony held this evening, Wed., March 2 at UVI.  Our school exhibit received a 3^rd place ribbon.  Our lamb, King, from last year’s school exhibit won 2^nd place in the Sheep division.  Our raised gardening plots here at the school placed 3^rd in the 4-H Youth Gardens competition.  There are monetary awards attached to the ribbons. The ceremony begins at 6:00 and the public is invited.

Peace Corp Lunches:  Tues, March 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the US Peace Corps.  Ms. Garren has arranged for retired Peace Corp volunteers to speak with students about their experiences and the opportunities available through Peace Corp.  The volunteers will be here during lunch on:  Thurs., 3/3, Fri., 3/4, and Fri., 3/11.

Movie Night:  Friday, March 4.  Students are invited to bring friends and family at 6:30 to watch (by popular demand) “Beverly Hills Chihuahua 2”.  The cost is $5.00. Hot dogs, popcorn and drinks will also be sold.

The Territory competition for Poetry OutLoud begins this Friday, March 4.  The winners from St. John and St. Thomas will join the winners from St. Croix at the Divi Carina Bay Resort.  The public is invited to attend the finals on Saturday afternoon at 3:00.   Students have prepared 3 poems for this event.  Three judges chose Heather Reedy and Nehemiah Lloyd from our school to participate in the competition.

Job Shadow Day is Wed., March 16.  On that day students will have a chance to “shadow” someone in the community.  Preparations are underway as we try to match students and their interests with a business leader in the community.  It’s an opportunity for students to explore a field they think they might like to pursue.  It’s also an opportunity for the business community get to know the school.

Note change for the Roseway:  The week on the Roseway is now scheduled for the mornings of Off The Hill Week, May 2 – 6.  25 students and 3 teachers will be sailing and participating in the 5-day curriculum on the Roseway.  Students will need to be at the dock in Gallows Bay by 8:15.  The ship returns at 11:30.  The full schedule for Off the Hill Week will be available after Spring Break.
